Assessment

At our school, assessment is personalised and meaningful, ensuring that every pupil's progress is recognised and celebrated. We assess pupils against the outcomes identified within their Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and break these longer-term goals down into smaller, achievable steps through Individual Education Plans (IEPs). This enables staff to carefully monitor progress, adapt teaching approaches and provide targeted support to help pupils achieve success. In addition to ongoing classroom assessment, pupils complete verbal reading and mathematics assessments to identify their current reading age, comprehension age and maths age, allowing us to accurately track academic development and identify next steps for learning.

To further support assessment across our pathways, we use B Squared, a specialist assessment system designed for pupils with SEND. B Squared enables us to measure attainment and progress in small, meaningful steps, providing a clear picture of each pupil's development across a wide range of curriculum areas. This approach allows us to celebrate progress that may not always be captured through traditional assessment methods and ensures that learning remains appropriately personalised for every pupil.

For our Post-16 learners, we use BKSB (Basic Key Skills Builder) to assess and monitor English and mathematics skills. BKSB provides detailed diagnostic information, helping staff identify individual strengths and areas for development. This supports the creation of personalised learning programmes that prepare students for adulthood, further education, employment and independent living, while enabling them to work towards recognised qualifications and meaningful next steps beyond school.

Through this comprehensive assessment approach, we ensure that every pupil's achievements, progress and potential are recognised, valued and used to inform high-quality teaching and support.
