Design Communication/Realisation
This aspect of DT develops pupils knowledge and understanding of everyday design, recycling and other environmental issues. Pupils learn to work within a design brief and are facilitated and supported to allow them to realise and develop their ideas in a two and three dimensional form. Use of appropriate materials, correct use of all relevant equipment and all aspects of Health and Safety are taught and reinforced at all levels.
Food Technology
Food Technology at Key Stage 3 follows The National Curriculum and is based upon The Equals Scheme of Work, which is a programme designed for pupils with learning difficulties. It is designed to address the standards, skills and knowledge that support food education and the maintaining of a healthy balanced diet. Following the ethos of the school all aspects of cultural belief and dietary requirements are respected, followed and studied within all teaching of food technology whilst still following the healthy eating philosophy.
Pupils learn a variety of culinary skills. They then transfer the skills learnt to their recipes, which they then evaluate. Some Key Stage 4 students have the option to follow a Home cooking skills level 1 and 2 accredited programme, which can lead to further study at G.C.S.E.
This course has been developed in partnership with Jamie Oliver Ltd, it aims to give learners the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy cooking meals at home. Learners will gain understanding of how to economise when planning meals to cook at home.
