PSHE & Citizenship
What do we do?
At Wightwick Hall School, our PSHE curriculum equips students with the knowledge, skills and values needed to lead safe, healthy and responsible lives. We support their personal development and prepare them to flourish as adults in modern Britain. Our approach places strong emphasis on Preparation for Adulthood, wellbeing and safeguarding, ensuring that learning is meaningful and relevant to our SEND community.
Our aims are to:
• Promote physical safety, emotional wellbeing and healthy relationships
• Build resilience, critical thinking and confident decision making
• Ensure all statutory RSHE requirements are met while reflecting national priorities and guidance
• Adapt the curriculum so that local safeguarding needs are understood and directly addressed
• Prepare learners for life beyond school through independent living, financial capability and active citizenship
How do we do it?
PSHE is embedded throughout the Wightwick Hall curriculum. Every class has a weekly timetabled PSHE lesson delivered by their form tutor, providing consistency and strong relationships that enhance learning.
Our programme is enriched through visiting speakers, performance groups and assemblies. We work closely with expert partners such as the NHS, emergency services and safeguarding teams to ensure students receive accurate, specialist led information.
Our PSHE curriculum is dynamic and responsive to the needs of our students. Regular monitoring of safeguarding concerns helps us identify emerging themes and adapt teaching to address real issues affecting our learners. This proactive approach also enables targeted interventions for individuals or small groups when required.
Student voice plays an essential role in shaping our PSHE provision. Learners provide feedback on what helps them most, enabling us to refine topics and resources so that the curriculum remains accessible, engaging and relevant.
