Computing
What do we do?
At Wightwick Hall School, we provide a high quality and accessible Computing curriculum that supports students in developing the digital knowledge and skills they need for learning, independence and future employment. Our approach is fully adapted to meet the diverse needs of our learners, ensuring that every student can build confidence and competence in an increasingly digital world.
We follow the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 National Curriculum guidance to ensure that all students develop a secure foundation in computing. This includes understanding how technology works, using it safely and responsibly and developing the ability to create digital content.
As students progress through the school, they move on to study vocational qualifications including the BTEC Digital Skills suite and Pearson Level 1 IT qualifications. These pathways provide practical and work related learning opportunities that prepare students for adulthood and the modern workplace.
How do we do it?
We use EHCP outcomes, baseline assessments and ongoing observation to create personalised learning pathways that ensure each learner can make progress from their individual starting point.
Our curriculum builds key digital skills through a structured and adapted programme that includes:
• Understanding and using everyday technology
• Basic programming and logical thinking
• Creating digital content such as images, presentations and media
• Developing safe and responsible online behaviour
• Using assistive technology to support independence
Through a blend of taught lessons, digital tools, real life applications and cross curricular opportunities, we ensure computing is meaningful and relevant.
In the upper school, students access vocational learning through BTEC Digital Skills and Pearson Level 1 qualifications. These courses develop workplace readiness, problem solving, digital literacy and confidence using industry standard software and processes.
Why do we do it?
To ensure every student gains essential digital skills that support independence, communication, safety and access to the wider curriculum.
To prepare students for future learning and employment by providing recognised vocational qualifications that align with real world digital expectations.
To support students in meeting their EHCP outcomes related to communication, independence, cognition and preparation for adulthood.
To help learners navigate the digital world confidently and responsibly, developing resilience and awareness of online risks and opportunities.
