Art and Design
What do we do?
At Wightwick Hall School we provide an inclusive and inspiring Art and Design curriculum that enables students to explore their creativity, experiment with materials and express themselves with confidence. We believe that every learner is an artist and deserves opportunities to develop their imagination, individuality and sense of achievement.
Our curriculum introduces students to a wide range of artistic techniques, skills and processes. Through practical exploration, students learn to communicate ideas and emotions, respond to the world around them and engage with art in a meaningful and purposeful way.
We nurture a learning environment where students feel valued, supported and encouraged to take creative risks. Art and Design helps our learners to celebrate diversity, understand different cultures and develop a sense of identity that strengthens their personal development.
How do we do it?
We offer a structured and progressive Art and Design curriculum that focuses on developing core skills such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, textiles and digital art. Projects are adapted to ensure accessibility for all learners while still being ambitious and challenging.
Students learn about the work of artists, craft makers and designers from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. This exposure enriches their understanding of artistic styles, influences and the role of art in society.
We use sensory rich experiences, hands on learning and a wide range of materials to ensure students can explore art in a way that suits their needs and preferences. Lessons are visual, practical and designed to promote independence, creativity and confidence.
As students move into Key Stage 4, they work towards an appropriate accredited pathway such as Entry Level Art and Design or vocational creative units that support Preparation for Adulthood and future career interests.
EHCP outcomes are used to inform planning and adapt projects so that Art and Design supports communication, emotional regulation, fine motor development and independent learning.
Why do we do it?
We teach Art and Design to provide students with a powerful means of expression, communication and emotional wellbeing. Creativity is a vital life skill that helps learners build confidence, resilience and pride in their achievements.
We want students to gain appropriate accreditation that supports their future pathways, whether they choose creative vocational options or simply use their artistic skills to enrich their personal lives.
Art and Design supports progress across all EHCP areas of need, developing communication, sensory exploration, coordination, independence and the ability to self regulate.
We believe that every student should have the opportunity to discover their creative potential and to experience the joy, fulfilment and sense of belonging that Art and Design brings.
