Mathematics

What do we do?

At Wightwick Hall School, we provide an adaptive and student centred approach to teaching maths. Our teaching is tailored to the individual needs, abilities and learning styles of each learner so that every student can make meaningful progress at their own pace.

We equip students with practical and functional maths skills that support independence in daily life. This includes counting, budgeting, time management, using measurements and applying problem solving in real situations at home, in the community and in future workplaces.

We work to build confidence in numeracy by teaching in engaging and accessible ways. Students experience regular opportunities to develop and apply mathematical skills in real life contexts so that learning feels purposeful and relevant.

How do we do it?

We use EHCP outcomes, baseline assessments and ongoing teacher observation to create ambitious yet achievable flight paths for each learner. These guide expectations and ensure progress is carefully monitored.

Our maths curriculum follows a spiral design so that knowledge is revisited, strengthened and deepened over time. This structure ensures that all students work towards a qualification that is appropriately challenging and suited to their needs.

We promote independence in maths through the use of assistive technology such as iPads, visual supports, manipulatives, adaptive teaching methods and clear explicit instruction.

Students are given regular opportunities to apply their numeracy skills in a wide range of practical situations. This includes cross curricular learning, onsite enterprise activities, community visits and Preparation for Adulthood pathways.

Why do we do it?

To ensure every student makes strong progress, achieves their accredited potential and leaves Wightwick Hall School with the mathematical knowledge and problem solving skills needed to flourish in adult life.

To help students recognise how mathematical skills are used in everyday experiences so that they understand the relevance of numeracy beyond the classroom.

To support learners in meeting their EHCP cognition and learning outcomes by developing confidence, independence and functional numeracy that will benefit them throughout adulthood.
