Physical Education
What do we do?
At Wightwick Hall School we provide an inclusive, engaging and varied Physical Education curriculum that enables every student to take part, develop confidence and enjoy being active. Our focus is on promoting physical health, emotional wellbeing and lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.
We create opportunities for students to improve their fitness, coordination, strength, teamwork and communication through a range of adapted activities. PE helps our learners understand the importance of staying healthy, making positive choices and developing habits that will support their wellbeing into adulthood.
Our curriculum supports students in discovering activities they enjoy, building resilience, achieving personal goals and experiencing success in a safe and supportive environment.
How do we do it?
We deliver a broad and adaptive PE curriculum that includes individual sports, team games, outdoor adventurous activities, fitness, swimming and movement based learning. Activities are designed to be accessible, motivating and appropriately challenging for all learners.
Lessons are structured to develop fundamental movement skills, confidence and physical literacy at every stage. We use clear modelling, visual supports, scaffolding and personalised targets to ensure that each student can participate successfully.
Where appropriate, students work towards accreditation such as Entry Level PE, Sports Leaders awards or units linked to health and fitness. These opportunities build confidence and support Preparation for Adulthood by developing teamwork, leadership and independence.
We work closely with therapists, external sports coaches and community facilities to provide specialist input and broaden the experiences available to our students. Outdoor learning and enrichment days also help pupils apply physical skills in real life contexts.
EHCP outcomes guide planning and teaching, ensuring that Physical Education supports motor skills development, regulation, communication and social interaction.
Why do we do it?
We teach PE to help students develop positive attitudes towards health, fitness and physical activity that will benefit them throughout their lives. PE supports physical and emotional wellbeing, builds resilience and offers excellent opportunities for teamwork, problem solving and communication.
We want students to leave Wightwick Hall School with an understanding of how to look after their bodies, make healthy choices and stay active as independent adults.
We ensure that physical activity contributes to progress across all EHCP areas of need, including physical development, communication, self regulation, social interaction and independence.
Our ultimate aim is for every student to find enjoyment in movement and feel proud of their achievements, whether in competitive sport, personal fitness or developing everyday physical confidence.
